Health Service Planning, Salisbury District General Hospital,

Wiltshire (UK)

Salisbury-Hospital-Case-Study.PNGClient Issue: The existing hospital built in the 1980’s was developed on the ‘Nucleus’ planning template developed by the UK Dept. of Health. In 2003/04 the organisation had new needs & responsibilities, especially in the fields of Plastic Surgery & Burns, which required additional updated facilities. Also new provision was needed for Trauma, Orthopaedics & for the care of the Elderly Mentally Infirm.

Solution: Extensive discussions with doctors, nurses, allied health professionals & executives formed the basis for the preparation of the ‘Planning Brief’ for a four storey extension to the existing hospital, housing Trauma & Orthopaedics wards (on the top floor with access to a roof garden), a new dedicated Burns Unit, an extensive Outpatient Department & on the ground floor, wards for the Elderly Mentally Infirm with direct access to a secure internal courtyard.

Outcome: The building was completed in 2006 & was received with widespread pleasure & satisfaction.
